Dangers of Consuming a Soda Glass a Day Triggers Cancer

People who regularly drink a glass of soda a day, regardless of their weight, are at high risk of developing cancer. So the conclusion of researchers in the new study published in Public Health Nutrition.

“Initially our hypothesis is that drinking soda will cause obesity, which is then associated with obesity-related cancers. However, we find there are more things that affect obesity,” said Prof. Allison Hodge, study leader of the Victoria Cancer Council (CCV).


Harvard mentioned, obesity has long been known as a risk factor for cancer. And soda is thought to contribute to overweight. Therefore, based on these assumptions, researchers from CCV and the University of Melbourne studied more than 35,000 Australians who had been diagnosed with cancer related to obesity.

This obesity-related cancer includes 11 types of cancer. Among them are kidney, colorectal, esophagus, postmenopausal breast, pancreas, endometrium, stomach, liver, aggressive prostate, ovary and gallbladder.

Through data from the Melbourne Collaborative Cohort Study in the span of ten years – reported during 1990-1994 and 2003-2007 – researchers found 3,283 people developed one of the obesity-related cancers because they drank soda every day.

After analyzing, also adjusting the waist circumference statistically, researchers instead found a direct relationship between soda consumption and cancer risk without having an obesity intermediary.

That is, anyone with any body shape, if he diligently drinks soda even if only once a day has the potential to suffer from cancer.

But even more surprising, researchers found no risk of cancer in those who drank diet soda. The reason, professor Hodge and the team suspect high and low sugar content is a key factor. To ensure, including understanding how the mechanism works, Prof. Hodge said further studies were needed.

In fact, quoting Newsweek.com, health experts have long been concerned about the safety of sugar substitutes in soft drinks. Studies in mice have proven the effects of artificial sweeteners that cause weight gain and cancer.

In 2017, researchers from Boston University showed that people who consumed artificial sweetened drinks were more likely to suffer from stroke and dementia, although no causal relationships were found and other lifestyle factors also affected.

Nevertheless, it is not easy to keep away and stop drinking soda. For those who are used to, the effect is similar to opium.
