Organic food is said to reduce the risk of cancer. However, when viewed more deeply and in detail, there is no link between organic food and cancer risk.
Talking about healthy food, pesticides in vegetables and fruit are usually considered by people to choose organic food.
A JAMA Internal Medicine study involved 68 thousand French volunteers since 2009 and they were interviewed about what they consumed, and how often they consumed organic and inorganic foods.
In 2016, those who often ate organic foods, including meat, vegetables, fruit and dairy products had a 25 percent lower risk of developing cancer. The study concludes, “the more frequent consumption of organic food has to do with the reduced risk of cancer.”
“Although this discovery has been confirmed,” wrote the study, “consumption of organic food in general can be a preventive measure against cancer.”
However, if seen in more detail in the study there are several things that are ignored. Launching Healthline, the study raises some doubts because researchers did not check the levels of pesticides in the body of participants, both from urine and other excretions.
The study also stated that the questionnaire material used had not been validated so that it was difficult to see what they were actually measuring.
Dr. Timothy Byun, an oncologist at the St. Cancer Hospital’s Cancer Prevention and Treatment Center Joseph, California stated that the study contained a large sample of research, but was limited to questionnaires (which were invalid).
“There is no urine test or blood test that really measures the levels of a person’s pesticides and their relation to consumption of organic food,” he was quoted as saying by Healthline.
Byun added, there is no clear link between organic food and cancer prevention.
Organic food is food that is not sought or developed by humans. However, over time, forests and fields are narrowing so that humans begin to cultivate organic crops.
These organic plants are claimed not to use chemical pesticides, but still use natural fertilizers or pesticides. Organic and inorganic food has no difference in taste, only different price tags; Organic food is sold more expensive.
Pesticides for food are usually harmless and in proper use can protect the plant itself. Avoiding inorganic food does not necessarily prevent people from dangerous chemical substances. Plants generally produce their own ‘pesticides’ in order to survive.
In contrast, in 2014, a 10-year study showed 500 thousand British women who ate organic foods had the same risk of developing cancer than those who never ate organic food.
What Reduces Cancer Risk?
The American Institute of Cancer Research (AIRC) reviewed a study that said women who consumed 5.5 servings of fruit and vegetable servings each day had an 11 percent lower risk of breast cancer than those who consumed 2.5 servings of fruit and vegetable servings.
The serving portion is based on a cup of raw vegetable leaves, 1.5 cups of cooked vegetables, or 1.5 cups of processed fruit / fruit pieces.
With regard to tumors, consumption of fruits and vegetables correlates with ER-negative tumors. ER-negative tumors are cancer cells that grow together with estrogen hormones in women, which require more difficult treatment than tumors in general.
More interestingly, the risk of cancer decreases after regular consumption of fruits and vegetables for at least 8 to 10 years. This is why some studies have been raised between the link between food and cancer, sometimes useless and far-fetched.
There is no strong enough evidence to prove consumption of organic foods can reduce cancer. Quick and Dirty Tips states that currently, the best way to prevent cancer is to consume vegetables and fruits regularly, both organic and inorganic.
Reducing consumption of red meat and fast food is highly recommended to reduce the risk of cancer. The Mediterranean diet, which is a diet by eating raw fruits and vegetables, is still the best means to lead a healthy life.
