What Is Breast Cancer?

 breast cancerBreast cancer is a disease caused by malignant cells (cancer) that grows in breast tissue. These cells usually appear on the channel or lobula in the breast. These cancer cells can spread between the existing tissues or organs and to other body parts.

How Common is Breast Cancer?

Breast cancer is the second biggest cause of death for women today. In Singapore, 1 in 16 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. Chinese women have a higher risk than the Malay or Indian counterparts of 10% to 20%. The highest case occurred in the age group 55-59 years. The risk of developing breast cancer increases with age. The good news now is that many women are now able to fight breast cancer because of early detection and improved quality of treatment.

What caused it?

The trigger factor of this cancer can not be known. But this can be traced from family history of breast cancer, early menstrual cycles, or other possible risk factors. Because it is so difficult to ascertain, each of us have risk of breast cancer, especially when we are 40 years old or more. Although the cause is still unknown, the total cure is possible with early detection through regular breast examination.

Signs of Breast Cancer:
1. A lump that does not hurt on the breast
2. Itching and a continuous rash around the nipple
3. Bleeding or discharge from an unusual nipple
4. Breast skin swells and thickens
5. Breast skin wrinkles or becomes sunken
6. Put into the inside
